I was born in Istanbul in 1983. After I went to primary school in Erenköy primary school, I went to secondary school and high school in Galatasaray high school. I started my medical education at Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2002, I started working as an Otorhinolaryngology assistant at Şişli Etfal Training and Research Hospital in 2009, and left as a specialist in 2013. During this time, I was particularly interested in nasal surgery. I had various studies on nose and ear aesthetics, my presentations at congresses and overseas visits. Rhinoplasty has always been my special interest and I am a member of European and Turkish ENT Associations, European and Turkish Associations of Facial Plastic Surgery, I have been working actively. In 2014, I passed the European Ear Nose Throat Board exam and earned the title of Fellow. In 2020, I got the title of associate professor. For years, I have been working intensively in all areas of Ear, Nose and Throat, but especially on nasal aesthetics.
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to alter the appearance of the nose. People may also refer to rhinoplasty as a “nose job.”
Rhinoplasty is a nose reshaping procedure done to enhance a patient’s nose in relation to its shape, symmetry, and size. The overall effect is a more proportional nose that eases other aspects of the face.
A person may undergo rhinoplasty for cosmetic or medical reasons. Rhinoplasty can fix structural problems with the nose that make breathing more difficult.
Is performed to achieve many different goals, depending on a patient’s needs. You can reshape your nasal structures from the skin, cartilage, and bone. The surgery could:
Most forms of surgical procedures depend on the individual and the technique a surgeon chooses. Although the classification might be the same, the patient’s desired outcome and anatomy will always dictate the approach. The first two are the primary procedures while the rest build upon them.
Open Rhinoplasty:
For open rhinoplasty, the surgeon incises the external skin between the nostrils to get access to the internal nose. Having access to the entire nasal structure, your surgeon has more freedom with how they reshape it. Many shy away at the idea of having actual incisions on their nose, but surgeons go to great efforts to minimize scarring so that it is not noticeable.
Closed Rhinoplasty:
During a closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes incisions from within the nostrils so that the scars are not visible to others. This kind of nose job procedure can be carried out in patients who do not require complex straightening of the lower parts of the nose, or complex work on the nasal tip.
Tip Plasty:
Tip plasty is just used for changes to the nip of the nose. You cannot limit yourself to tip plasty if you also want changes to the bridge of your nose. This can be both an open or closed procedure.
Secondary Rhinoplasty
Given the complexity of rhinoplasty surgery, some initial procedures may require adjustments, corrections, or modifications . In such a case, a surgeon might have to perform a revision, also known as secondary rhinoplasty. The process could either be open or close, depending on the expected new goal.
To ensure that you are fully ready for a rhinoplasty operation you need to ensure the following precedes the operation:
Rhinoplasty surgery includes the following steps:
Step 1 – Anesthesia
Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.
Step 2 – The incision
Rhinoplasty is performed either using a closed procedure, where incisions are hidden inside the nose, or an open procedure, where an incision is made across the columella, the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils.
Through these incisions, the skin that covers the nasal bones and cartilages is gently raised, allowing access to reshape the structure of the nose.
Step 3 – Reshaping the nose structure
An overly large nose may be reduced by removing bone or cartilage. Sometimes surgery of the nose may require the addition of cartilage grafts.
Most commonly, cartilage from the septum, the partition in the middle of the nose, is used for this purpose. Occasionally cartilage from the ear or rarely a section of rib cartilage can be used.
Step 4 – Correcting a deviated septum
If the septum is deviated, it can be straightened and the projections inside the nose reduced to improve breathing.
Step 5 – Closing the incision
Once the underlying structure of the nose is sculpted to the desired shape, nasal skin and tissue is redraped and incisions are closed.
Additional incisions may be placed in the natural creases of the nostrils to alter their size.
Step 6 – See the results
For a few days, splints and gauze packing may support the nose as it begins to heal.
During your rhinoplasty recovery, a splint and/or packing may be placed inside your nose and a splint or bandages placed on the outside to support and protect the new structures during initial healing.
While initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, it may take up to a year for your new nasal contour to fully refine. During this time you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose as it refines to a more permanent outcome.
Swelling may come and go and worsen in the morning during the first year following your rhinoplasty surgery.
You will be given specific instructions that may include:
How to care for the surgical site
Medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection
Specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health
When to follow up with your plastic surgeon.
Be sure to ask your rhinoplasty surgeon specific questions about what you can expect during your individual recovery period:
Where will I be taken after my surgery is complete?
What medication will I be given or prescribed after surgery?
Will I have dressings/bandages after surgery?
When will they be removed?
Are stitches removed? When?
When can I resume normal activity and exercise?
When do I return for follow-up care?
The results of rhinoplasty surgery will be long-lasting. While initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, it may take up to a year for your new nasal contour to fully refine. During this time you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose as it refines to a more permanent outcome.
As your body ages, it is natural to have some gradual changes to your face including your nose. But most of your improvement should be relatively permanent.
A healthy lifestyle and life-long sun protection will help extend the results of your new appearance.
Cartilage
Connective tissue that forms the structure of the nose.
Columella
The narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils.
Deviated septum
Cartilage that separates the nostrils is misaligned which may cause partial nasal airway obstruction.
General anesthesia
Drugs and/or gases used during an operation to relieve pain and alter consciousness.
incision during an operation to relieve pain.
Rhinoplasty
Surgery to reshape the nose.
Rhinoplasty is a type of surgery that involves reconstructing the nose to change its shape. A person can opt for a rhinoplasty to improve breathing function or for cosmetic purposes.
Plastic surgeons or an otolaryngologist, which is an ear, nose, and throat surgeon, can perform rhinoplasty procedures if they have the necessary training and experience.
People may undergo rhinoplasty procedures to change the physical appearance of their nose and achieve a specific facial profile. As a result, rhinoplasty can be a form of cosmetic surgery.
Rhinoplasty can alter:
the side of the nose in relation to the face
the width of the nose
visible depressions or bumps on the bridge of the nose
the tip of the nose
the shape and width of the nostrils
the symmetry of the nasal passages
At other times, some medical conditions may require rhinoplasty. Medical reasons include:
Nasal abnormalities: A surgeon can treatTrusted Source a cleft lip and palate using rhinoplasty.
Nasal obstruction: Structural abnormalities in the nose can causeTrusted Source obstruction to the nasal passages. Although a doctor may prefer septoplasty as the surgical method, a surgeon may perform septoplasty alongside.
Deviated septum: A deviated septum is one of the most common causes of breathing difficulties related to the structure of the nose. Rhinoplasty can help to produce better alignment of the nasal structure, which can make breathing easier.
Trauma or injury to the nose: Rhinoplasty can help to reshape the nose after an injury.
Complications from a failed primary rhinoplasty: A person can undergo rhinoplasty to correct a previous rhinoplasty.
Before considering the procedure, a surgeon will review a person’s medical history and assess whether or not a person is a good candidate. They will also assess if a person’s rhinoplasty goals are achievable.
If the surgery goes ahead, a surgeon will require a person to:
undergo lab tests
stop smoking
avoid any medications that can increase bleeding, such as aspirin, herbal supplements, and anti-inflammatory drugs
People spend 1 night in the hospital after rhinoplasty.
The doctor or a nurse will go over the post-operative care instructions that a person needs to adhere to.
Notes that these may include avoiding activities that can increase blood flow to the face, such as:
bending down, straining, or lifting
having a hot bath
swimming
having extreme facial expressions, such as laughing or smiling
placing eyeglasses on the nose
If possible, people should avoid sneezing through the nose. Recommends coughing if a person feels the urge to sneeze.
A person should also sleep on their back using extra pillows to elevate the head and reduce swelling.
A person may resume normal activities within 10 days.
A septoplasty is a procedure to straighten the septum. A surgeon may perform a septoplasty at the same time as rhinoplasty.
Summary
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to alter the appearance of the nose. A person may wish to undergo rhinoplasty for cosmetic or medical reasons.
There are two types of rhinoplasty procedures: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. The choice of which procedure a surgeon will use depends on the extent of the nose reconstruction a person requires.
Although a safe procedure, there are risks a person should consider. Before getting the surgery, people should talk with a surgeon to ensure they are good candidates for the procedure.
There is no set age for Rhinoplasty, but adolescents and children should avoid plastic surgery as their noses continue to develop.
There may or may not be bruising depending on the condition of the surgery. Patients with bruises, light or sensitive skin, and those who need repositioning of the nasal bones are more likely to bruise. Most of the bruising recovers from surgery after 10-12 days.
Not for the majority. One day after the medical procedure, the majority rate their pain somewhere in the range of 0 and 4 out of 10.
There are no reason sinusitis patients should not undergo rhinoplasty therefore sinusitis patients can have a rhinoplasty.
This process does not negatively affect the sense of smell because an incision in that area, etc. no intervention is made. There may be mild nasal congestion due to edema in the nose for a short time after the procedure. As a result, it will affect the sense of smell to a certain level until the swelling in the nose passes.
